Disrupt Yourself by Jay Samit is certainly a challenging read. Not hard to follow, in fact it flows beautifully, but challenging to the reader on a personal and professional level. "Everyone has the power to compete on a global scale without having to raise millions of dollars for equipment and tooling" is what Samit describes on page 166. He's right. We do. But Samit doesn't just sit back and observe, he then serves up examples of how this is happening right now and challenges us to get up and do something about it. After quoting Robert Louis Stevenson, Samit goes on to write "What's at the heart of all sales and marketing: creating demand even in the absence of logic." For me this fundamental understanding of brand elevated Samit to a whole new level. There are many books written about disruption, often focusing on one area with the obvious being innovation. Samit's breadth of experience, coupled with the endless examples cited in his book takes us far beyond the cliched obvious and challenges us to truly understand the mindset of a disrupter and apply these principles ourselves.
I thoroughly enjoyed being pushed out of my comfort zone and I've curled the pages on this one coming back to it multiple times trying to allow it all to really sink in. I highly recommend you get your hands on a copy. For me, old school paperback is the way to go. Happy reading! Comments are closed.
